Basic eligibility requirements

Australian skilled and employer sponsored/nominated visas

This page provides a brief snapshot only of some of the basic eligibility requirements for the visa types mentioned below and must not be relied on as migration advice. Subclass 189 Visa

  • Submit an Expression of Interest
  • Score at least 65 points on the Points Test
  • Be under 45 years old at the time of invitation
  • Have competent English language skills
  • Have a nominated occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • Meet the skills assessment requirement for the nominated occupation
  • Have not been found to have any health or character issues

    Subclass 190 Visa

    • Meet the criteria for the subclass 189 visa
    • Have a nomination from a state or territory government agency
    • Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list of the nominating state or territory
    • Meet any additional criteria set by the state or territory government agency

      Subclass 491 Visa

      • Meet the criteria for the subclass 189 visa
      • Have a sponsorship from an eligible relative living in a designated regional area or a nomination from a state or territory government agency
      • Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list of the sponsoring state or territory
      • Meet any additional criteria set by the sponsoring state or territory government agency

          Subclass 482 Visa

          • Have a nomination from an approved sponsor
            • Have worked in the nominated occupation for at least two years
            • Have the required skills and experience for the nominated occupation
            • Meet any skills assessment requirement for the nominated occupation and country of passport
            • Meet any English language requirements for the visa
            • Meet any health and character requirements for the visa
            • Be paid a market salary rate for the nominated occupation
            • NOTE – no upper age limit

            Subclass 186 visa – Direct Entry Stream

            • Have a nomination from an employer sponsor
            • Have worked in the nominated occupation for at least three years
            • Be under 45 years old, unless exempt
            • Have the required skills and experience for the nominated occupation
            • Meet any skills assessment requirement for the nominated occupation 
            • Meet any English language requirements for the visa
            • Meet any health and character requirements for the visa

            Subclass 494 visa

            • Have a nomination from an approved sponsor for a position in a designated regional area
              • Have worked in the nominated occupation for at least three years
              • Be under 45 years old, unless exempt
              • Meet the skills assessment requirement for the nominated occupation
              • Have the required skills and experience for the nominated occupation
              • Meet any English language requirements for the visa
              • Meet any health and character requirements for the visa
